My Favorite Spring Flower

These cute little things are without a doubt my very favorite spring bulb. They are Jonquil, Early Louisiana (N. Jonquilla, 1612). They have the most delicious scent you will ever smell! I keep a watchful eye ( and nose!) for these cuties to start blooming in the spring.
Aunt Debbi (Aunt Debbi's Garden) has some of these and posted about her blooms a few weeks ago. On the way back from Canton Trade Days 2 weeks ago I also saw some along the side of the highway. However, I have never seen the bulbs in the garden centers.
I got these as pass-alongs from my Mother's neighbor. Mother would tell me stories about growing up in the country, and having these jonquils on either side of the road that led to her house. What a sweet memory! I thought the only way to get them was as a pass-along, but my wonderful neighbor's sister gave me a website where you can order them! (Thank you Jane and Sally!) Old House Gardens sells Heirloom Bulbs. You can buy them online, or they have a catalog you can order--which I immediately did! It came in the mail this weekend, and I will tell you there are lots of good things to order. Even if you don't want to place an order, it has very good information in it about all types of bulbs.
This is how they describe this little Jonquil:
"The sweetest smelling flower your grand-
mother had in her garden...It's clusters of nickle-sized flowers with tiny cups seem made for fairies."
Now, who could resist these precious little flowers!

Do you have a favorite Spring bulb?

These are very pretty -- I favor daffodils :-) they seem to lead the way to Spring for me as soon as I start to see them. Plus, mine are NO Maintenance and being the non-gardener that I am, no maintenance really helps.

These are ever so sweet. I don't have them here so I must check them out. I think this is what I grew in NC, they called them jonquils and a nice scent. A super good choice for a favorite bulb.

I like all narcissus (daffodils)and I think these jonquils are also narcissus? You just can't beat these bulbs. They look great in your garden. Ah, wish I could smell them.

Martin, Danke vielmals! :)
Glad you like the flowers!

jj--"lead the way to spring"--I like that. And, it is so true!

Tina, I wish you could smell them too! I have little bouquets in the kitchen. One is right by the sink--I enjoy the fragrance so much. Plus, the blooms last a pretty good while inside.

I've not seen that one before and it looks adorable. I do enjoy a good smelling daffodil. Thanks for the info on the bulb catalog. A co-worker and I were trying to identify a flowering bulb today.

Debbi, mine are always later I think. I sure enjoy them while they are here. I love to pick little bouquets for inside.

Susie--check out the website. I think you would enjoy the catalog. Can you imagine searching for old lots and finding these heirloom bulbs just knowing some lady from long ago planted them! How special!!

Hi Linda !
They look so sweet and I bet they smell wonderful (anything besides snow and ice in my garden would smell WONDERFUL !!!) .. I have the small daffs can't remember their names right now .. I have had the worst brain spasm with memory this morning .. maybe I should have had more coffee ?

I am going straight to that website! I love pass-alongs and heirlooms; I am just old fashioned at heart. Those are the tiniest I have ever seen. I may have to add those to my wish list!

Those are the sweetest little jonquils that I have ever seen. The scent is a nice bonus too! My favorite spring bulb is the Spanish Bluebells. :)

The very essence of my childhood springtime was this flower.

Joy, I'm glad the little jonquils brightened your day! We are getting a cold front tomorrow and we all hate it. The warm spring like weather spoils us so much, we hate going back to winter.

Nola--I am with you girl! I love pass-alongs and heirlooms too. Like I told Susie--I can just picture myself out in the country coming across where an old house once stood and a yard filled with flowers! How I would cherish doing that some day!

Racquel, I don't think I have seen a Spanish Bluebell--but I will be looking it up! These jonquil are sweet little flowers!

Oh Brenda--what a sweet memory! I saw a big patch of them off I20 on the way home from Canton. They smell is devine! :)
