Bulb Update

It's raining...
again, but before the rain started coming down hard, I decided to check out my bulbs. These daffodils are in front and have been around for years. As you can tell, they have been up quite a while and I think I see signs of flowers. (or is that wishful thinking!)
Also in front, and also older bulbs, these are daffs to the right and Early Louisiana Jonquils to the left. The Early Jonquils are heirloom bulbs I planted many years ago. They are transplants from one of my Mother's neighbors. My very favorites! You'll hear more about these I am sure in future posts.
Now for the newbies. I bought several different kinds of daffodils last fall. When I planted them I took a popsicle stick and marked them all. But, bad decision on my part. Our bad weather has completed destroyed the markers, so-all I know is that these are new. Looks like 2 different kind to me.
This is the bed I planted lots of Breck bulbs in. This is a great place to let them naturalize. You can see them just starting to come up. This area is the one I was worried about due to poor drainage. Guess all the bulbs did not rot, but I don't see as many as I know I planted. Hopefully there are more to come.
Just starting to see these hyacinths. I planted a few new ones, but there are some from last year too and I do not remember exactly where they were planted. New, old--I am just thrilled to see them!
There are many more daffs
"spring"
ing up and I was really happy. But I knew something was missing..the tulips! Where are the tulips? I reminded myself that daffodils are early and tulips come much later. On a closer inspection this afternoon I do see this bulb just starting to peek through. I have to really look good to tell hyacinth from tulip, but I am pretty sure this is a tulip. Oh, I hope there are more...lots more! I planted so many this year. They are all planted on either side of the flagstone path leading from the house to the flagstone patio. Last year I had several and the view from the house was just beautiful. I knew I needed to plant lots in fall, which I did, but not sure how our weather is going to affect them. I read that it is not uncommon for bulbs to rot in years that are really rainy, and well...that has been us this year!
I know Phil the Groundhog predicted 6 more weeks of winter, but coming out everyday to check the progress of bulbs is one sure sign spring is looming around the corner!

It is an exciting time of the year because of the new bulbs coming up! I see a lot there in your garden!!(-:
I have tulips where I didn't plant them coming up!! The squirrels decided to rearrange things(-:
I have some daffodils about the same stage as you have too!
Some of mine look like they may bloom sooner!
I have those little white bell things blooming(forgot the name). They always bloom first! I guess I should take a picture(-:

I remember those jonquils from last year. And they do look like they have buds. It's only a matter of weeks or even days now.

Cindee--those pesky little squirrels like to rearrange don't they? I sprinkle red pepper to keep them out. It seems to work.
My curiousity is up on those white flowers. Are they a type of daffodil or jonaquil? Yes, take a picture! :)

Tina--days?? Whoo-hoo! I can't wait. Do you ever pick your daffs and bring them in? I struggle..I
LOVE having a few inside, but love seeing them out in the yard too. I usually pick from the front as I don't see them as much. The little jonquils are so fragrant, I always pick them. The kitchen smells so good!

Oh yes. I love daffs inside the house. Make sure you don't put them with other flowers though until they've sat on their own in water for a day. They secrete some kind of toxin that affects other flowers. But nothing better than a huge cheery bouquet of daffodils. Days away..

You are a bit ahead of my daffy growth! Yippe, spring is on the way.... I love the bunny statue you have laying on his belly (Complainign post). I see our bunny guest strike that pose often. Where did you find that guy?

Tina, that is such good information. I need to remember it too because I tend to mix the daffs with other blooming things.

Skeeter, you may not believe this, but I got the bunny at Hancocks fabric store! But..I have also seen them at Hobby Lobby. Do you have have either one of those stores? If not, I can look for you next time I go. Let me know! :)

Hey Linda. Your photos make me want to go out and see if anything is breaking the surface in my beds. Won't be today tho. It's just way too wet out there.

Snow bells with the little white bloom. Does it have a little green dot on each petal? My snow bells are in bloom.
Rainy here & really wet. Sure wish it would quit for awhile so we can dry up a bit.

You are so lucky to have spring so close to your grasp. We are getting buried in nearly 12 inches of snow instead, so spring is still a LONG way off! Can't wait to see the flowers, not just the new growth. Here too. I planted hundreds of bulbs, and can't wait for the show!

Nola-I went out today and I could tell the daffs do have flowers. I hope the artic front next week doesn't stop them from opening!

Oh Susie, it is so wet here. And, more rain is due next week with really cold temps. Hope you and your Mom are feeling better!

Lola, bet you are thinking about what is blooming in Cindee's garden. I bet that is what it is. Sounds like it is wet everywhere! We are so grateful all this rain has filled up our lakes!

Robin-are y'all getting that snow that DC is getting? My daughter tells me they are expecting 30 inches! OMG--I can't even imagine 3 inches! We are lucky with early springs, but we do have to tolerate hot,hot summers! (which I don't mind at all!) :)
