Fall at the Arboretum

It has been so rainy in the Dallas area, I have had a hard time finding a Saturday to go to the Arboretum. Even though today was cloudy and pretty chilly, it was a great day to tour some of the gardens.
It is fall, and the trial gardens are full of plants showing off their fall colors. It was so wet, I just stayed on the walkway and didn't venture over like I usually do. Looks like most things did really well this past year. They will be planting bulbs and pansies pretty soon I think.
The cute little thatched roof house is still transformed into Hansel and Gretel's house. The plants on either side of the walkway look like they are about ready to stop blooming, but they have been spectacular this past year. I love the cottage look this area has.
This is one of the ponds. I think it looks great! It won't be long before the lilies and poppies will stop blooming. In the winter, the ponds look cold and lonely, but the minute warm weather returns, the pond comes back to life.
This is one of the beds around the grassy meadow. This time of year the Arboretum beds are full of coleus (my favorite!) and ornamental grasses. The colors are normally very striking-this cloudy day does not do justice to their brilliance.
And, Cindee, I took this picture just for you! These hens and chicks were really big!
Can you tell it's getting about time for Halloween? woooooo...
And of course, we saw lots and lots of pumpkins!
They lined the walkways..
There were pumpkins to buy..
There was even a pumpkin house!
But we had the cutest pumpkin there!

Awww, the grandbaby is getting big and I bet he enjoyed himself with you two immensely. It must've been a different experience seeing the arboretum with a baby than from last year. The gardens look so good! That meadow grass area is my favorite.

Linda, your little punkin is the cutest ever, although a bit bewildered by the whole day, it appears! I'm looking forward to seeing the Arboretum someday ... thanks for including us in your visit!

I'm behind on blog reading but wanted to tell you (1) I loved your window boxes and want to know what kind of soil you use. My hayracks are a battle to keep moist. (2) That cookie recipe sounds wonderful. I think I'll make some!

Tina, would you believe this is the first time hubby has gone to the Arboretum! Normally I take my mom. But today we met baby Adam and his parents out there to take pics in the pumpkins!

Brenda, the hens and chicks really caught my eye. It was so "fallish" out there. Mums, pumpkins, cool air...sigh... :)

Hi Cindy! I have tried many mixtues of soil in the boxes, but like your hayracks-they all seem to dry out quickly. I tried the mix that is suppose to hold in moisture, but it doesn't work any better. They seem to do better with a mix that does not have much peat moss in it, so I buy plain Miracle Gro potting soil.

Thanks Aunt Debbi! Adam is a cutie! We really enjoy seeing him.

MR--I think Adam's daddy will have him out on the golf course and not in the garden! :)

Cute pics of your little pumpkin. I wish we were closer so that we could visit during October and see all the pumpkins too.

Awesome pictures...I love being able to identify the "spot" of the picture, since there's no way I could identify the plants. But I sure do enjoy looking at all the plants ;-) LOVE LOVE LOVE the picture of you and hubby and grandbaby!!!!

Pam, I have often thought I wish we could do a Texas garden bloggers day at the Arboretum--so I wish you were closer too. It's really very pretty-especially in late spring.

Thanks JJ--I don't usually do pics of Bert and I--but Adam makes this an exception to the rule! :)
Yes, you know the places well I bet! Hey, there were no floating pumpkins yesterday. The fountain had water in it..but no pumpkins!

What a great outing. Cutest lil punkin I ever saw.
I did notice the headless horseman's head. Neat the way they made the horses.
Never seen a pumpkin house before.

Lola-I love the way the Arboretum uses pumpkins every year. Very clever folks there! Last year that had floating pumpkins, but did not have any on Saturday. I guess really the Arboretum is pretty every season though--it makes my day to walk through the gardens.

I love the use of all those pumpkins in the Arboretum gardens. Looks like alot of us are having a rainy October so far. It makes it feel cold & dreary here.

Racquel, I can't believe all the rain. It is finally sunny here today, and I have spent most of the day outside. Our back is still boggy though.
(sooo glad to see your comment!) :)
