A Croton for Fall

Fall just wouldn't be fall without a croton on the front porch. I found a really nice size one at Lowe's for a great price. I have tried to keep them through the winter in the house, but never had much luck. This one is so pretty that I will try again, but will not shed lots of tears if it does not survive.
I read that it is very easy to propagate, which sparks my curiosity since I love to start new plants.
Crotons need several hours of bright, direct sunlight per day. The more light, the more colorful the leaves will be. Grown in inadequate light, the leaves will be mostly green with yellow veins. (Leaves may also fall off in low light which is what I think happens when I bring them inside.)
Pumpkins are not out yet here, but as soon as they are I will buy 2 to set right beside this pretty plant.
Nothing could be more "fallish".........

.....except for maybe a scarecrow smiling at you through the flowers!

That little scarecrow is too cute! I don't think he will scare anyone.

Crotons are great for fall. I have one from last year that is called "Gold Dust". It is only green and gold. I kept it in the house all winter and it did look pitiful. As soon as it warmed up outside, out it went. It really looks fantastic right now.

Susie--no, he is way too cute for scaring--and he loves crows! We wouldn't want him guarding our veggies!
I need to remember about your croton when I bring mine in. I would love to over-winter it. It's probably one of the prettiest ones I have ever had!

Fun pics and great info for plant challenged...my mom (a knowledgable plant person) was taking the other day and was pleased I knew what she meant...there's hope for me yet :-) Thanks for all the great posts, I love everything you share even if I don't always know what's totally going on. Glad I'm not going to be tested later...teehee

I never thought of these plants as fall but you are so right, they scream it with their pretty colors. Good luck keeping it until next spring.

What an adorable Scarecrow Linda! He is too cute to scare off anything. Your Crouton does have a fall flavor and with pumpkins to compliment it will be really autumn at your house. I've never grown those before, and I gave up on houseplants a few years ago when the dogs & cat kept nibbling on them. ;)

Yeah--I don't think Sam will be scaring anyone.
I'm not real into house plants either except ivy (they are so easy!), but Susie's comment encourgaged me!

Meadowview-I know you are not on the coast but I figure you are going to feel the effects of Ike! I hope you are safe!

You are so sweet to ask! We should be fine. Right now it is raining. The wind is starting to ready pick up and they say this is the beginning, but I live right outside of Dallas and the big storm is to our east. My sister in Houston (Spring) got up to a neighbor's tree in her swimming pool though. Houston has major damage.
Thanks for asking!! :)

Your fall plant looks very happy there(-: I have not seen pumpkins yet either. I am sure they will be out soon. I noticed at WM they were cleaning out the garden department so that must mean pumpkinland is near.(-:

OK, just checking in on you to see if you are alright. I was watching the weather channels until midnight and went to bed knowing the worst was yet to come. So relieved to learn you are ok. Flooding everywhere. So sorry about your sister's. Will continue checking on blog friends.

The young man who goes by Mr tumnas is on 17 acres about 75 miles north of New Orleans. He was caught in Gustav and on Sept. 1 wrote the power was out, his 3G Internet connection was going in and out, and he had about half a battery charge left on his laptop. He has not posted since Sept. 12.

The Brenda Blog is about 200 miles north of Houston (I think she said Houston, but my memory is lame.) At noon today she still had electrical power and the rain was pounding.

Hope your garden is not taking a beating.

Cindee--my best friend told me just today WM had pumpkins out here! Guess I will be making a trip soon!

Barbee--thanks so much for you kind words. My thoughts and prayers are with the areas so hard hit. I hope Brenda is ok too. I think she lives in or around Tyler. East Texas was hit pretty hard with strong winds I think. We were very lucky here in the Dallas area.
