Tulips

I didn't plant any tulips last fall. I decided it was too much trouble. Here in Texas you must chill the bulbs about 8 weeks, and they are annuals no matter what you are told. (or so I thought!) I really missed watching for them to appear in February, and didn't even notice there were 2 red flowers coming up around the pond. I was really shocked when I saw the red buds mixed in with the daffs and bluebonnet.

What a pretty color combination! And how ironic to have these 2 lonely little tulips here. Guess what their name is-- "Come Again!" I really think I planted more, but these were the only 2 that really did come back. I don't believe I will re-think and plant more in fall--I am pretty happy with all the daffodils that will naturalize...but what a nice Spring surprise to find blooming this year!
I hope you have lots of good Spring surprises in your garden this year!

Thanks JJ. Now that you mention it--I know bulbs must be kept watered in summer, so it's is really a surprise these came back!

It's so nice to have such pretty red tulips in March!

I don't think you water tulips in the summer:)( They go dormant and actually like it dry. Maybe you planted these years ago and they finally gained some strength to bloom? Sometimes my tulips do that.

Tina--it is nice to see those tulip blooms in "almost spring!" I know I planted several of these in 2010 as it is in my garden journal. I thought bulbs needed some water, but knew too much and they would rot---so guess the tulips in the ground loved our summer! :)

I love that red tulip. How is the rest of your garden doing. I hope the bulbs I sent you are coming up.

Sure wish tulips would grow for me here. Boo Hoo. Things are beginning to come alive here. Got some veggies planted plus some flowers. Cleaned out my canna bed today & put black cow down.
How are your newbys doing? Hope they are ok.

Lola--I have been meaning to email you--but just no time! The little snow drops are the only bulbs that bloomed this year--but they are the cutest things I have ever seen! I didn't think they would produce this year-so it was quite an exciting surprise!

I have one planter of tulips that return each year when the remainder planted are no shows. I will not waste my time on tulips any more. I am with you on the Daffys though, I love those yellow cherry faces in the spring...
