What IS this???

Does anyone recognize this?? It started growing in the wildflower bed last spring. I thought it was pretty, so I just let it go. It adds quite a bit of texture and interest to that bed, but over the summer it has gotten way out of hand.
It has very fine, fern like branches. I promise-I did not plant it. Hubby thinks I must have just forgotten that I planted it, but I think I would remember..wouldn't I? It's not like I have anything else on my mind, right? :)

I will be ready to plant wildflower seeds in about a week, so I will need to cut this back. We are thinking we might try and move it to the corner of the bed this winter, but before I do, I sure would like to know what it is!
Can somebody out there please help me??

Linda I don't have a clue what that mystery plant is. I think it is lovely tho. I like that light, fernly like texture.

I like it too Susie--but it has gotten too big. I hate to completely get rid of it though.

Oh my! looks like the word is out in the plant world that you backyard is one of the nicest places to be - you'll be accepted, and nourished and allowed to thrive - they're coming to you :-)

lol jj--the word must be out! I welcome almost everything, just wish I knew who I was welcoming! :)

looks like asparagus to me.

Asparagus??? Actually, I thought so too, but then figured there was no way that would seed. If that is what it is (and yum, I love asparagus), I will move it to the garden area. wow..

I think it looks like asparagus too. Or at least a relative. Maybe a seed was blown in or a bird left it there? Maybe your neighbors have a bunch?(-: It does look pretty though its a keeper for sure! Hows the new tree doing?

Ditto on the asparagus. It is a nice ornamental. Some plants flower and make small berries if they are the female variety. I say keep it.

I also think it's an asparagus fern that's been zapped with some alien form of mutant super-sized nuclear power and that if you don't get rid of it, not only will it take over your whole garden, but you and your children will begin to either disappear or adopt a zombie-like walk and start to eat dirt. (Which would be cheap, but where's the enjoyment?)

For the love of God! Get rid of it girl! We love you just the way you are!!!

Gee--who knew I was growing asparagus! I called hubby to give him an update on your comments!

Cindee-thanks for asking about the new tree. I guess it is doing ok. I go out every day and tell it to GROW! :)

Tina, will it produce? I love asparagus, but maybe we'll move it somewhere else. I love the way it looks against the fence. Do you think we could move it??

Sandy--girl you are scaring me. Good things the kids are all grown-but I am rather a short person, so I may disappear (think I already have a zombie walk at times! :)
Actually, if I keep it, it will need to live in another spot. Can't have it taking over the wildflower bed--I need those bluebonnets in spring!

I have to echo what the others have already stated, it looks like Asparagus to me. It's so pretty isn't it? :)

Okay, it does look like asparagus, but it also looks like the crazy seashell cosmos plant I have growing. Started it from seed back in May, not a bloom in sight, but enough ferny foliage to just about take over the garden! See my post from August 25, and you'll see a photo of it. It's a thug, and no sign of flowers. But I just can't tear it out without seeing the flowers! I've got another month or two till the first frost, so maybe I'll see them.

Racquel--it is pretty, but now I wonder...read MsRobin's comment..

Robin--you are right!!!! I remember seeing that post and thinking it kind of looked like the fern leaf plant I have. No blooms ever though. Now I wonder..could it be that instead of asparagus??

Everyone else has already said it: looks like asparagus. Whatever it is, it's very attractive! If it makes seed, send me some! haha!

It is pretty Nola--but after reading msrobin's comment, I am wondering about it being a type of cosmos...I cut it back some today to make room for bluebonnet seeds. Very interesting new development! :)

Hi Bren--thanks for stopping by. I still am not sure about the fern like tall plant. I am off to some garden centers this afternoon, so stay tuned--hopefully I will find something to bring home!

Kalyan--how sweet of you to say that! My photograper skills are not the best, plus I don't have the best camera--so you just made my day with such a nice compliment! :) Thanks for stopping by!

I don't think that is asparagus Linda. I have asparagus & it doesn't look like that. Mine is in blooming period & will later have berries that will turn red. The birds like them & will help to sow it all over.
I can send you a pic if you like.

A picture would be great Lola!

I think Robin is right--I think it's a type of cosmos. That makes the most sense as cosmos seeds scatter so easily.
Thanks for letting me know! Hope all is well with you!

Looks like asparagus to me. After you eat the little shoots in the spring...you can cut it back. If it turns yellow soon you can be sure it is asparagus. When it is yellow and dry I have used it in fall arrangements.

Meadowview Thymes said...

Thanks for the suggestions Joan. I will watch for it to turn yellow. There is really a mixed vote on what this plant is. I wish all of you garden bloggers would appear one day to see the plant and decide. I would serve coffee and muffins! :)
Thanks for stopping by! Happy Gardening!

I'm just now catching up on blogs and I hate to be a party pooper but I think that's a weed! I've seen it around here in empty lots and on roadsides.

Meadowview Thymes said...

You may be right Cindy. It has never bloomed. I like the texture it gives the wildflower garden, but I don't like the shade it gives that area.
