Spring Break trip to the Hill Country

For spring break this year hubby and I decided to take a trip down to the Hill Country. For those of you that might not know, this is the area around Austin. To me, it is the most beautiful part of Texas. It was settled by immigrants from Germany and still has so much German influence. The first night we stayed in Gruene (pronounced Green) which is a historic German town right outside New Braunfels. We love to eat at the Gristmill..which was, well...an old gristmill! The hamburgers are to die for, and the Sangria is even better. The next day we headed to Fredericksburg.
We stayed here. This is an old log cabin that was built in 1847. I realize not everyone would be interested in this kind of accomm-
odation, but the cabin sure was cute!
This is the back..
This is the bedroom...
yeah, I know they probably did not have king size beds back then, but it sure was comfortable
And this is the kitchen. We are not discussing the bathroom..I concen-
trated on how cute the rest of the house was!
The weather was perfect most of the time we were there. Of course I had to take a trip to my favorite place, The Wildseed Farm.
It is way too early for anything to be blooming, but you can see these poppies just starting to show.
I also saw some of these: BLUE
BONNETS!
We saw lots of bonnets by the side of the road just ready to bloom too.
I had a great time going through the
"Butterfly Haus."
Wish I had one of these..
So many Zebras. The butterflies would fly to your hand if you held it out.
We also took a fun hike to the top of Enchanted Rock. We went the short route--straight up!
On the hike we saw a few wildflowers blooming..
Just enough flowers to give the otherwise drab landscape some color.
Of course, what trip to the hill country would be complete without some junkin'! I love to dig through and find the perfect "treasure." This old chair was just $5.00. I think it will be perfect holding a hanging basket.
I love, love old galvanized buckets and was lucky to find some really good ones. I am thinking red geraniums!

The best find of all...and my wonderful husband gets the credit for spotting it...is this old washtub on a stand. And what a steal! My goal for years has been to find one of these. Remember the area behind the pond I cleared out a week or so ago? Won't this look great right there with cosmos growing all around it? I can't wait to plant those seeds. But, as you may or may not know..we came home on Sunday to snow on the ground! Yeah, here in Dallas it snowed on March 21st! It melted fast and the temperature today is 70! Sigh... Interesting note: one of our weather forecasters said it will be cold until the pecan trees start to bud. Are there any buds on your pecan trees??

Not to mention--You all had a great time. And what treasures you found. I like the galvanized buckets, tubs or pails. Anything galvanized. That wash tub is to die for. Love where you plan to place the chair.
Keep us informed as to how it all works in your garden.
My DH always said cold weather can happen till the Pecan Trees but out. Then it's Spring & warm weather.

Lola-we did have so much fun! I love trips like that! I love glavanized buckets and pails too. Guess because my decorating style is so rustic. So your hubby knew about the pecan tree buds? My Mother did not..but said her tree was NOT in bud yet.

Cindee--I thought you had a wash tub! And a double--wow! I am trying to decide what to plant in mine. I need to see how much sun would be in that area. I know it hits the ground, but I don't know if it would hit the wash tub. Fun to have thoughts of planting!

The hill country is beautiful Susie. I hope you get to visit one day.
I don't know what I will plant in the tub, but that's the fun-trying to find the perfect plant!

Yeah, the Gristmill is wonderful Tina. I love the look..and the food! They have big galvanized buckets all across the front planted with bright flowers. So pretty!

CG--grab that sweet hubby of yours and head to the hills! You would love it!! :)

This is a place I would love to visit if I lived near-by. Great pictures and the washtub will make a great addition to your own landscaping.

Hi Kathy! The Texas hill country is my favorite part of Texas. There are beautiful rolling hills, a nice river (Guadalupe), and in the warmer months the wildflowers are unbelievable! Gee, makes me want to go back! :) Glad you liked the pictures! I can't wait to find things to plant in the old washtub!

Oh, the old buckets and washtub are fantastic. Thanks, you've given me my first glimpse of bluebonnets this year; one more month and they'll be blooming here!

Meadowview Thymes said...

Nola-did you look at Cindy's "My Corner of Katy" today? She has pics of bluebonnets. Mine have buds--hope they bloom soon!

Linda, I love Gruene, especially the Gristmill! I'll look forward to seeing what you do with the washtub. I'm headed to Round Top/Warrenton to go antiquing on Friday with a group of friends. I'm taking my truck so who knows what I'll come home with!

Have fun in Round Top Cindy! That is suppose to be the best one around. Hope you will share your finds with us on your blog!

What a great trip and love the cabin. I do wish you had shown the bathroom accommodations though; you so have my imagination peeked on that one, lol. We loved the Austin area and spent a lot of time there when we lived in Killeen, TX. Back then we were more into the 6th street bar scene then anything else. We were really young so what can I say. Now I would be all over the flowers and nature aspect of life. My, how time changes us. Great treasures for the garden and yes, I can see cosmos behind the pond!

Ok Skeeter--go stand in a closet. Then picture a toilet on one side. Sounds ok so far, right? On the other side picture a tiny sink. Then, right behind that sink picture the floor with 4 tiles and a drain in the middle. Then picture a hand held shower....and there you go. That was the bathroom! lol Actually, we are campers, and I thought, as I showered, what I would give while we were out camping for a hot shower just like this! :)

At first I thought you were kidding when you said you stayed in that cabin! But it was cute inside. Sounds like a fun trip to me, I love exploring.

Robin, in Fredericksburg there are lots of original cabins that have been re-done to create a B & B. They are all really cute and quaint-but you do have to like rustic to stay in one. :) It was a really fun trip!
