I worked most of this chilly, cloudy day inside trying to get the house ready for Thanks- giving dinner. Around 2 I was ready to head outside and try and tidy up the back and check the progress of the wildflower seeds I planted. I am really pleased and wanted to share the progress with you. These are Bluebonnets from seeds I planted the first of September in the wildflower garden. They are coming up all over this bed. I am really excited that they look so good!
These are seeds that re-seeded from last year's bluebonnets They are in the bed along the fence on the other side of the yard from the wildflower garden.
These are from seeds planted this year also in the bed along the fence, but a little further down.
These little green mossy looking things are California Poppies! I am really happy to see them coming up. I planted them in several places and they are doing well..
except right here due to a certain squirrel that will not stop digging!
Finally, look very close and you can see the Red Corn Poppies starting to come up. They also have a mossy look. Last year my poppies did really well so I am hoping to have the same luck again this year.
Optimism--one of the most important words in a gardener's vocabulary!

I about screamed for joy when I saw your blog pop up and those bluebonnets were the first thing I saw. They look fantastic! I can't wait to see them blooming in the spring!
I wonder if it is too late for me to put out poppy seeds?
Nola--isn't it exciting!! I love spring. You know, some of the prettiest bluebonnets I have ever seen were where you live!!
Debbi--I don't know. They need to get in and start to come up before the first frost. Last year I did bluebonnets the first of Sept and poppies in Oct. I get the seeds from the wildseed farm in Fredericksburg (ordered online) Have you ever been there? It is a real treat for me to get to go!!
I can't believe you have all those seedlings coming up. You will have some beautiful beds when those blue bonnets bloom. Can't wait to see them.
Susie--I did throw lots of seeds hoping I would get some good seedlings. I am really excited just thinking about it. We had a mild winter last year though-I don't know what will happen if we have a bad winter. I will just hope for lots of blooms regardless of the weather! :)
It's exciting to watch the things we plant from seed emerge or reemerge each year. Can't wait to see your Bluebonnets. I haven't seen any in years...

I wish I'd planted poppies! I too will have to check if it's too late. I need a beautiful flower against the shades of brown that are everywhere here now.

Racquel--it is so rewarding to watch growth from the little tiny seeds you planted. I hope these all the seedlings continue to grow and will bloom in spring.
Cindy--it's warmer where you are so you should be able to plant them now. I love, love bluebonnets. We have a few areas around Dallas that have them, but nothing like South Texas. Ennis (Hi Nola!) also has beautiful areas.
garden4life--where do you live? It might not be too late. I use pansies to help with that brown look we have all winter. This area has not had a freeze yet, so we still have quite a bit of green.
You guys are so lucky in Texas to have all those bluebonnets. I know it was a big topic for all the visiting gardeners to Spring Fling last year. Hard to believe seedlings are already coming up.
Spring is really pretty in Texas Tina with all the bluebonnets. I have always wanted to have some in my yard and finally decided last year to do something about it! I hope the poppies make it. That pesky squirrel is digging them up! Grrrrr!!
Keep those fingers crossed jj!!! I need all the luck I can get to get everything blooming this srping!

I agree Skeeter. Spring in Texas can be so beautiful if the bluebonnets bloom well. It takes my breath away to drive down the road and see a field of blue..sigh..

Thanks for your suggestion (comment) about the hollyhocks. I DO love them, an aunt always had them growing when I was a kid, and I've tried several times to grow them, but no success. I don't know what I do wrong. I will keep trying, though, I hope I just haven't found the right type in the right spot.
Nola, I am not an expert on hollyhocks and have also had trouble growing them, finally I just spread some seeds on the ground in the fall and they have grown and bloomed for the first time this year. They are usually biennials and need the right conditions. Mine are in some sun in average soil, but with shade too. Right now I have a bunch of seedlings so I know they'll be back next year. Try fall sowing and remember where you planted them so you don't weed them:)
Nola, I agree with Tina. Mine get morning sun, but that is all. I noticed they came up one year and bloomed the next. I hope mine re-seeded and I get more next year!
