The Front Porch

I have a calendar called "On The Front Porch." It's pictures of different porches each month. The pictures never really show the seasons except in fall--the trees have golden leaves. It's just a wonderful collection of porches. I have always yearned for a big front porch, but as you can see, I don't have one. My house is a one story ranch with a small porch. I can't put very much on it, but always manage to have a few things. The big pots with geraniums on always on either side of the door. They don't look very good right now, but were beautiful when it was not so hot.
I have 2 coleus on either side of the steps.

My
"Welcome" sign is on an iron hanger and sits in the flower bed right in front of one of the coleus. These coleus got so big they were top heavy, so I trimmed them down quite a bit.
They were pleased with the cut and are now growing back very thick and happy!

I always like to have something that smells good on the porch, so on one side I have a pot of peppermint and rosemary.

Then on the other side is cinnamon basil and lemon basil. They all smell so good when someone brushes up against them.

I would love to have a big front porch, but I don't so I make due with what I have. I can still dream though...of a big porch with rocking chairs, maybe a swing, maybe a table with some chairs. I'll have a cup of coffee or glass of lemonade on my dream porch and listen to the birds or watch the fireflies.

So.....what's on your front porch???

Truly I would be embarassed to show it to you. It doesn't look inviting or welcoming like yours does. You may not have a big front porch but it's really nice.

I always wanted a big front porch too Linda. I have a little stoop basically with nothing on it. :) But yours is decorated very nicely. I love the mints & basils in their containers.

You're front porch looks so inviting. I'm in the fortunate position that I might have to do a drive by and smell your peppermint, rosemary and basils. I bet they are so refreshing! Do you think your "granddoggy" give me away?

Susie, I love that you said "welcoming". That's exactly what I want to achieve. Thanks so much for that comment!

pg--if you have never grown these basils, try some. The fragrance is so wonderful. Just the sun shinning on them makes that front area smell good!

jj--come on over!! The basils are worth the drive..and Allie would love another person to play with!

I love your front porch. You have it all decked out just beautifully. I love the sunflowers in the basket on the door(-: I love the brick too.(-:
It is very inviting!!!
My porch is probably the same size as yours. I wish I had a big porch with all those fun things too but oh well. I enjoy mine. Besides that would be more room to clean up...lol(-:

Did anybody say "roadtrip"? Maybe someday soon during lunch we will have to take one to visit your yard and garden.

I have always wanted a big wrap around porch - but I've got an alcove, not a porch. There are some Victorian style houses here that have some lovely porches. But, you gotta make do with what you got, so I am working on making my alcove more welcoming. The jasmine and mandevella (sp?) vines now cover the arched entrance to the alcove and smell so good, but I sure want to try some of the mints and basils that you have. The alcove is shaded though, I might have to have small pots that I could move around to get some sun...

Cindee, I actually thought of the picture of YOUR porch on July 4th when I wrote this. I loved all your patriotic things! I guess we always want more, but like you said--just more to clean! : )

mr--hey, come on over with jj! We'll brush against the basil and drink iced tea on the patio. Only, let's wait for fall! : )

Kim, wish I could see your gardens! Last time I was there it was Christmas and Santa was in the yard! Your porch sounds really nice with wonderful scents! Just dream about that wrap-around porch..wicker furniture...ceiling fans...sigh..

You have a great front porch. Eve at "Gardening on the Gulf Coast" is doing a workshop on the front door. You might let her know you posted yours. Looks great. Mine is nothing spectacular at all.

Thanks for the compliment Tina, and also the comment on my potting bench. I do indeed have a great guy!
I will head over to see Eve..thanks for letting me know!

I love porches, too. One year I had a large wall calendar titled Porches. It was beautiful. A bit of wistful thinking on my part.

Barbee--that's me with my "On The Front Porch!" I have one at work, and each new month we all look at the porch and decide if we are drinking coffee, tea or maybe a glass of wine on the porch! Great dreams!
